激変の世の中にあってどう生きるべきか
この1年は、世界だけでなく、多くの人々の生活にも多くの変化と激動がありました。人によっては、他の人よりも大きな激変に見舞われた人もいます。昨年のお正月に能登半島地震で被災された方々のことを思うと心が痛みます。
大きな災害を経験した人も、個人的な挫折を経験した人も、共通しているのは将来への不安と恐れです。将来の必要を満たすだけの十分なお金があるだろうか？健康を維持できるだろうか？それとも、まだ未知の病気に苦しむことになるだろうか？あるいは、生活のストレスで体を壊すだろうか？これらは、地位に関係なく誰もが抱える共通の不安でしょう。
私はクリスチャンとして、聖書に記されている約束を思い出すことで、これらの不安に対処しています。聖書全体を通して、私たちは、必要に迫られた時に神が備えてくださるという約束、危険にさらされた時に神が守ってくださるという約束、弱っている時に神の癒やしの力が与えられるという約束、そして、常に私たちを慰め、導き、助けてくださる聖霊が存在するという約束を見出すことができます。しかし、これらすべては自動的に与えられるものではありません。聖書は、受け取るための条件を示しています。
聖書は、求めること、信じること、信頼すること、そしてその信念に基づいて行動することを説いています。また、種を蒔くことによって、私たちは受け取ることができると説いています。真の信仰とは能動的な信仰です。受動的で、何かが転がり込んでくるのを待っているような信仰ではありません。
様々な研究により、他者を積極的に助けることは、助ける側にも精神的な健全性の向上、社会的なつながりの促進、目的意識の創出といった恩恵をもたらすことが示されています。これは、しばしば自分自身のニーズに対する解決策の発見にもつながります。このようなコミュニティの結束感こそが、災害に見舞われた地域で「絆」という言葉がしばしば使われる理由なのです。
能登では、自宅を失いながらも地域の人々を助け、私たちの災害救援活動において、支援を必要としている人々と私たちをつなげ、後方支援をしてくれた中心人物である70代の男性、U氏に出会いました。彼は大混乱の中でも希望を見出し、人々が自分に施してくれたことへの感謝の気持ちと、目的意識、そして新たに芽生えた友情に満ち溢れています。
新年を迎えるにあたり、私は、12世紀にイタリアで裕福な家庭に生まれ、貧しい人々を助けるために財産を投げ打った、キリストの忠実な従者であるアッシジの聖フランシスコの有名な祈りを思い出します。彼は、物質主義からの解放、奉仕への集中、そしてより高い目的への信頼という基本理念を共有し、積極的な影響を及ぼしました。

主よ、私をあなたの平和の道具としてください。
憎しみのあるところに愛を、
争いのあるところに赦しを、
分裂のあるところに一致を、
疑いのあるところに信仰を、
絶望のあるところに希望を、
闇のあるところに光を、
悲しみのあるところに喜びをもたらす者としてください。
神よ、
慰められることを求めるよりも慰め、
理解されることを求めるよりも理解し、
愛されることを求めるよりも愛することができますように。
なぜなら、与えることによって私たちは受け取り、
赦すことによって赦され、
死ぬことによって永遠の命に生まれるからです。

How Should We live in Times of Turmoil and Change?
The past year has seen a lot of change and upheaval not only around the world, but in the lives of many people. For some there has been more upheaval than others. In Japan, we remember the individuals that were affected by the 2024 New Year’s Earthquake on Noto Peninsula. Whether one experienced a major disaster, or a personal setback, the one thing that is common to all is the sense of anxiety and fear about the future. Will I have enough money to meet future needs? Will I stay healthy, or will I succumb to some yet unknown disease, or even to the basic wear and tear of life? All these are common anxieties for all regardless of one’s position in life.
As a Christian I deal with these anxieties by reminding myself of the promises that are found in the Scriptures. All through the Bible we find promises of God’s provision in times of need, His protection in times of danger, and the availability of His healing power when we are weak, and His ever present Holy Spirit to comfort, lead and guide us. However, all of this is not automatic. The Bible does present the terms for receiving.
The Bible talks about asking, believing, trusting, and then acting on those beliefs. It talks about sowing our seed, through which we can receive. True faith is a proactive faith. Not one that is passive and sits waiting for something to drop in our laps. Various studies have shown that being proactive in giving and helping others also benefits the helper by improving mental well-being, fostering social connections, and providing a sense of purpose. This can often lead to discovering solutions for one’s own needs. This sense of developing community is why the word 絆 (Kizuna, refering to social bonds to overcome adversity) often appears in situations where a community has faced disaster. In Noto, we met a Mr. U, a man in his 70’s who though he lost his own home, he has been a key figure in helping others in his community and helping us in our disaster relief operations to connect us to people in need and provide logistical support. He has found hope amidst the chaos and is full of gratitude for what people have done for him, and the sense of purpose he has, and the new friendships that he has discovered.
As we enter the New Year, I am reminded of the famous prayer of St. Francis of Assisi, a faithful follower of Christ in Italy who was born into a wealthy family in the 12th Century and gave up his wealth to serve the poor and shared the underlying principles of detachment from materialism, focus on service, and trust in a higher purpose to create a positive impact.

Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek
To be consoled as to console;
To be understood as to understand;
To be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
